Parappa the Rapper (1996) was not the first rhythm-based game, but it's credited as the first influential rhythm game with its core gameplay used as the template for various games produced since then (Dance Dance Revolution, Pump It Up, Guitar Hero, Rockband, Just Dance, etc). Despite waning popularity of the genre, advancements in technology kept gaming developers to find new ways to innovate gameplay for all types of games. On the line up of many touch pad games comes ReRave by Step Evolution.
Step Evolution has a background in dance games, but ReRave is designed with the multi-touch technology in mind. ReRave uses the entire screen to interact with colored-circles that are very similar to Apple's power buttons.
Unlike most rhythm games where an object on screen is scrolling towards a stationary spot for the gamer to time and hit the corresponding button, the circles in ReRave are their own timer. The the symbol in the middle rotates counter-clockwise and stops at the 12 o-clock position. That's when the gamer is expected to touch the circle. All of this is meticulously programmed by the developers to be synchronized with the accompanying song.
Like most dance rhythm games, the songs are mostly Electronic Dance Music (EDM). This game is available on arcade and can be purchased on iTunes for your iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch devices for $0.99. It's also available for Android devices.
From iTunes, the game starts you with 3 songs to play with. Each song has 3 difficulty levels. You can compare your scores in the game globally by signing up for a free account. There are 10 free songs you can download for in-app purchases before you start shelling out money to buy song packs. The game is designed for the arcade and iPads. On screen interaction gets to be too crowded on smaller touch devices, but still doable. I've only tried this game on my iPad mini.
It's not for everyone, but rhythm game enthusiasts would really appreciate this game. Here's a display recording of me playing two songs:
I'm done.
